Carreau (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Carreau was a French field and area measure in Haiti . As Alexander von Humboldt noted, the measure was the same as the Carré used in Martinique . The underlying length measurement was the step / pas with 1.1369 meters for 3 ½ old Parisian feet .

  • 1 carreau = 10,000 square steps / pas carrées = 122,500 Parisian square feet (old) = 129.263 ares

Larger areas were measured with the caballería common in the neighboring Spanish colonies . In Haiti this measure was smaller than in Cuba . The equivalent was:

  • 1 Caballería = 10 Carreaux = 12.9236 hectares
