Carrigagulla SW

Carrigagulla ( Irish Carraig an Ghiolla ) is a megalithic complex northeast of Ballinagree in the Boggeragh Mountains in County Cork in Ireland . It consists of two large stone circles (Carrigagulla A or NE and Carrigagulla B or SW), a small five-stone circle , two rows of stones and an offset Ogham stone .

Carrigagulla A

The stone circle is 8.2 m in diameter and consists of 16 stones in situ and one offset stone. Their height varies from almost 90 cm to just over 30 cm. In the middle of the circle is a small boulder.

Location: 52 ° 0 ′ 11 ″ N, 8 ° 55 ′ 0 ″ W.

Carrigagulla SW

The stone circle has a diameter of 7.8 m, 17 stones and a central stone. 15 stones are standing, two had fallen over. As usual, the portal stones are the tallest at just under a meter. the rest are graduated in height except for the axially lying stone in the southwest. The two portal stones are radial to the circle. Several of the circle stones are flat on top and two are almost cube-shaped.

The rows of stones

  • Carrigagulla NE is a row of three stones (two large, one small) of which one large stone fell over.
Location: 51 ° 59 ′ 42 ″ N, 8 ° 54 ′ 59 ″ W.
  • Carrigagulla SW was a row of five stones, four of which are staggered and used as goal posts. A lone stone needle makes up the rest.
Location: 51 ° 59 ′ 40 ″ N, 8 ° 53 ′ 51 ″ W.

The ogham stone

The ogham stone found while cutting peat has been in the Cork Public Museum since 1940 .
