Cartan is a small impact crater near the eastern edge of the moon . It is located directly west of the larger Apollonius crater . The crater rim is circular with a small impact on the east side. The inner area takes up almost half the diameter of the crater. A small crater connects the southern rim with the northern rim of the Apollonius H crater and thus forms a short chain of craters.
Cartan was known as Apollonius D before it was renamed by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1976 .
