Carthago mobile home

The Carthago motorhome GmbH is a German manufacturer of recreational vehicles of the premium class with headquarters in Aulendorf .

Companies

Carthago Reisemobilbau GmbH was founded in 1979 by Karl-Heinz Schuler. The owner-managed group of companies currently employs over 1,400 people and is one of the leading premium manufacturers in the industry in Europe. With a view to the future, founder and sole owner Karl Heinz Schuler has transformed the Carthago group of companies into a foundation.

history

On July 1, 1979, Karl-Heinz Schuler founded the Carthago company in Ravensburg after completing his studies in industrial engineering. The aim was to convert various basic transporter models into recreational vehicles. The brand name Carthago came about by chance because the company founder liked the term. In the mid-1980s, Carthago concentrated on expanding the VW Transporter and, with the Carthago Malibu, grew to become the second largest manufacturer of VW buses in Europe. Production amounted to around 1,000 camper vans a year. In 1991, Carthago presented mobile homes with its own body on chassis for the first time, penetrating a new market segment for Carthago. The first name bearer in the new program was the Carthago abacus based on the VW T4 . In 1997, Carthago presented a luxury class motorhome with the Mondial alcove mobile on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter . In 2000 Carthago had around 100 employees and the company's focus was now on the manufacture of mobile homes with its own body. In 2001, Carthago stopped manufacturing VW-based camping buses. In 2002 Carthago restructured its program. Below the M-Liner, the new integrated called Opus formed the bracket for the upper middle class motorhome. In the same year, Carthago placed the chic, an alcove mobile, in this middle class. With it, Carthago targeted the class of motorhomes with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 t. At the same time, in 2004 Carthago presented the Mega-Liner, an integrated motorhome of the liner class on a MAN chassis. In 2007 Carthago produced more than 1000 mobile homes with 260 employees.

In 2008 Carthago built a new plant in Odranci / Slovenia. The chic became the chic c-line I, an integrated motorhome especially for the class with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 t with an all-aluminum sandwich for the walls and a continuous double floor. In 2009, the chic c-line T and the chic high-line followed, which was later renamed the Carthago highliner. With the chic e-line and chic s-plus, Carthago quickly expanded the family of the chic series. In 2010 Carthago already had 450 employees. From 2011 the brand expanded its range with the c-tourer. The brand's new top model in 2012 was the Carthago liner de luxe based on Iveco Daily and MAN . The number of employees in the company had meanwhile risen to 800.

In 2013 Carthago relocated its headquarters from the founding location in Ravensburg to Aulendorf in Upper Swabia . Carthago had built a new factory here, a sales exhibition, a service center with an attached warehouse and the new company headquarters - Carthago City . The area covers 100,000 m², of which 30,000 m² were built over. In the same year Carthago founded the subsidiary brand Malibu ( Malibu GmbH & Co. KG ). One year later, Carthago introduces the new generation of the chic c-line. This also applies to the chic e-line and chic s-plus from 2015. Two years later, in 2018, the liner-for-two was introduced.
