The Casa de los Montero is a building in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo .
The building, erected in 1831, is one of the few preserved in the colonial style of this era of Montevideo's history and is located in Ciudad Vieja at Calle 25 de Mayo 428–434 between Misiones and Zabala streets . The architect of the Casa de los Montero was José Toribio . The building, initially conceived as a residential building for the wealthy merchant Antonio Montero , which was originally called el Palacio del Marmól (in German: Marble Palace) due to the use of marble for the decorative details of the house , opened in part on July 18, 1896 , probably the western section of the Casa de los Montero, with the Salón Rouge the first cinema in Uruguay. In the years 1958 to 1962 restoration work took place under the direction of the architects E. Fernández, R. Fusco Vila and LA Raffo as well as the Dirección de Arquitectura of the Uruguayan Ministry of Construction (Ministerio de Obras Públicas), which led to the change in use today. It has housed the Museo Romántico since 1962 . The eight-meter-high, two-story Casa de los Montero, with a floor area of 551 m², is owned by the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture (Ministerio de Educación y Cultura).
Since 1975 the building has been classified as the Monumento Histórico Nacional .
