Casabó is a district ( barrio ) of the Uruguayan capital Montevideo .

Together with Pajas Blancas, it forms the common district of Casabó - Pajas Blancas . Casabó is located in the southwestern part of the Montevideo department at the foot of the western slope of the Cerro de Montevideo . The barrio is bordered by the streets Oficial 6 , Holanda , Calle 10 and Lituania as well as the area of ​​the former Frigorífico Nacional .

history

Casabó was founded on July 18, 1921. In the barrio, which at that time already had basic sanitation, electrical light, paved streets and transport links to Fortaleza del Cerro , it was possible at that time to build a house with two to four bedrooms for to acquire a cash payment amount of 120 pesos and a balance in monthly installments. Since at least the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, Casabó has been one of the poorer districts of Montevideo, is characterized by modest architecture and has to contend with problems in sanitation as well as with pollution and flooding.

Residents

Around 3,500 families live in Barrio Casabó (as of 2006). The compound Casabó - Pajas Blancas district is said to be one of those Montevideos that has seen the greatest population growth in the recent past. For Casabó / Pajas Blancas, for example, between the 1985 and 1996 censuses, the number of inhabitants doubled. The 2004 survey showed an increase of 22.4 percent.
