The Winkeler Aue is an inland island in the Rhine .
Geographical location
The Winkeler Aue belongs to the Winkel district of the town of Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau-Taunus district and is part of the Inselrhein . It is located at the height of Rhine kilometer 520 in the so-called Winkeler Bucht , which, beginning at the Oestricher crane , is separated from the main fairway by interrupted parallel works over a length of 2.6 kilometers and a width of up to 300 meters on the right bank of the Rhine . The height of the island is between 79 and 83 and on average 81 meters.
history
The Winkeler Aue is a young island shore side after the construction of the parallel works by natural Anlandungsprozesse especially after flooding along the longitudinal work has grown out of mud banks. Depending on the water level upstream of the floodplain, these are sometimes considerable. The island growth continues. On older official maps dating from 1968, the Winkeler Aue is still shown namelessly as a sandbank or shoal, but it was already there in 1953 with a few young groups of trees.
nature
The island is a nature reserve and FFH area . On the mostly dry part of the island, a softwood alluvial forest with largely undisturbed flooding dynamics has formed spontaneously.
The island is a proven breeding ground for black kites , gray goose , Canada goose and mute swan . Demonstrated were there too Marsh Warbler , Little Ringed Plover , Yellow Warbler , Nightingale and garden warbler .
Entering the island and the surrounding power structures and landings is prohibited all year round.
