The Casimirschloss is a former medieval castle on the Burgberg in Kaiserslautern . Formerly owned by Emperor Barbarossa , Count Palatine Johann Casmir had the castle rebuilt and expanded in the 16th century. Only the Pfalzgrafensaal remains of the complex today.

history

The castle was built after 1571 by the sovereign of Palatinate-Lautern Johann Casimir next to the Barbarossaburg . The castle was badly damaged in 1635 by the imperial troops of General Campaign Master Melchior von Hatzfeld and again in 1688 by French troops in the Palatinate War of Succession. In 1703 it was set on fire and finally blown up in the War of the Spanish Succession . As part of the redesign of the underground passages in the Imperial Palace , the Casimir Castle and its surroundings were renovated in 2008. Another step towards upgrading the historic buildings is currently taking place as part of the urban redevelopment program “Active City Center Kaiserslautern”.
