Caso di Sciacca

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Caso di Sciacca was the feud between the Perollo family and the Counts of Luna that lasted from 1459 to 1529.

history

It all began with the wedding of Margherita Peralta, Countess of Caltabellotta, and Count Artale of Luna. This marriage crossed the interests of Giovanni Perollo, who coveted Margherita and the county of Caltabellotta. During a procession in which Artale took part unarmed, Perollo tried to stab him. He didn't succeed. The Count of Luna's revenge was immediate. Together with many friends and relatives, including the Tagliavia and the Siracusa , he tried to capture Perollo. Since he had hidden himself and was nowhere to be found, he slaughtered all the Perollo vassals that he got his hands on.

A civil war ensued between the families, which lasted into the next generation and even did not shy away from the use of cannons. The so-called "Incident of Sciacca" even occupied Emperor Charles V and Pope Clement VII.

It ended in 1529 with the death of Giacomo Perollo, whose body Count Luna had him dragged through the streets of the city on a horse. In order to pacify the city, Charles V even sent troops to Sciacca . Count Luna fled to Rome to his uncle Pope Clement VII. But neither he nor the emperor were ready to forgive him. Count Luna desperately committed suicide by throwing himself into the Tiber .
