Castel Capuano
Castel Capuano is a castle in Naples . Capua is the name of the neighboring town in the east of the city wall, which gave its name to the ancient city gate Porta Capuana . The castle forms the end point of the inner-city Via dei Tribunali .
history
The original building dates from the 12th century and was commissioned by Wilhelm I (Sicily) , the son of Roger II of Sicily . Castel Capuano is considered to be the oldest castle complex in Naples that still exists today. About a hundred years later, an extension and thorough renovation by Karl von Anjou took place . It was not until 1484 that the building became part of the city fortifications of Naples and a royal residence. An expansion of the city made the castle militarily insignificant.
From 1540 a vicariate was established here at the instigation of Pedro Álvarez de Toledo , Viceroy of Naples, and court was spoken in the building, a function that still takes place here today.
architecture
Today the structure is in relatively good condition. The medieval structures and building elements can be seen particularly well from the inner courtyard. Inside, especially in the Cappella Sommaria , you can still see plenty of stucco decorations and fresco paintings from the early era.
