The castle was destroyed by the Turks in 1566 , but was rebuilt by Valerio De Santis in the same year. In the 17th century the castle served as a tribunal and prison. In 1713 it was completely restored. In the 19th century it was used as a residential building. Today it houses a museum and art exhibitions.
