The Castello d'Passerin Entrèves is a Höhenburg in 700 meters on a slope of the hill of Saint-Christophe in Aosta between the vineyards and orchards the fraction Sorreley, about one kilometer from the Castello Jocteau .

description

The Castello Passerin d'Entrèves, which is privately owned and inhabited to this day, houses a rich collection of art objects and furniture from different historical periods, from the remarkable pewter collection to the precious collection of walnut furniture made in the Aosta Valley. The castle is according to law no. 1089 from 1 January 1939 listed building and the Association of historic residences in Italy ( Italian Associazione dimore storiche Italiane entered).

architecture

The Castello Passerin d'Entrèves is well preserved. One can clearly distinguish two architectural sections according to their construction time, but the aspect of a noble residence is more important than the old structure of a military fortress.

The oldest part is the round tower on the south side, where the family chapel is located. In the western part, which is also old, the castle shows the typical architecture of the Aosta Valley.

The newer area of the castle with most of the buildings was added on behalf of the Sorreley family during a restoration after a fire, regardless of the style of the older part.

Access road to the castle

An increase in the west tower, the walling of the windows of the gallery on the first floor, the large central staircase in the garden, the north staircase and the entrance arch, the latter planned by the architect Carlo Ceppi, date from the 19th century. Also in the 19th century, the garden and park were newly laid out with new paths and a grove of firs and new herbs was planted.

The Castello Passerin d'Entrèves stands in an area that was built on with an old Roman villa at the time of the founding of Augusta Praetoria, the old Aosta .

Of uncertain origin, even if it probably dates from the 14th century, the castle belonged to the rule of Quart in the Middle Ages . It is known to belong to the Sorreley (De Superlege) family in the mid-16th century: the family was ennobled in 1570, but died out during the plague epidemic of 1630.

The last female descendant of the Sorreleys, Mencia, married Jean Jacques de Pléod (or De Pléoz). The new owners, the heirs of the De Pléod family, lived there until 1723, the year in which André de Pléod was sentenced to death for witchcraft : he is said to have tried to cause his wife to die by magic. The castle thus fell back into the Count's disposition and the Passerin d'Escalier family, who were related to the De Pléods, bought it. Several modernizations and expansions of the facility date from this time. In 1814 the last offspring of the Passerin d'Escaliers bequeathed his possessions in Saint-Christophe to the Passerin d'Entrèves, who carried out further structural alterations and had the park adjacent to the castle reorganized.

In 1940 the Prefecture of Aosta bought the castle. After the armistice of Cassibile on September 8, 1943, the Passerin d'Entrèves, then residents of the castle, were exposed to Nazi reprisals . After the liberation, the Allies requisitioned the east wing of the castle to accommodate some South African officers who were waiting to be returned.

Alessandro, Lodovico and Pietro Passerin d'Entrèves et Courmayeur are the current owners of the castle.
