The Castello di Bosses is a medieval town castle in the municipality of Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses in the Aosta Valley .

History and description

The castle, with its massive, square shape, typical of the first fortress houses in the Aosta Valley, dates from the 12th century and was built for the Bosses (or De Bocha ) family , who received this area as a fiefdom from the Lords of Quart . At the end of the 13th century, the Bosses family got into a dispute with the Counts of Savoy and after some negotiations Giacomino di Bosses was forced to become a vassal of the Savoy in 1288 and to transfer the castle and the fiefdom to them.

The overwriting and vassalage a few decades later led the family to attempt a rebellion against the Counts of Savoy, which led the Balivo of Aosta to issue an ordinance according to which the Savoyard troops should have destroyed the castle's observation tower, of which Stones can still be seen in the eastern part of the complex.

After final conflicts, Tommaso di Bosses decided in 1320 to hand over all his own possessions and the customs rights of the fief to Count Amadeus V of Savoy. At the end of the 15th century, the Bosses family managed to get the property back from the Savoy and they had the castle rebuilt in its present form. The family remained owners until 1742, when the property was sold to the Savins . After this family died out in 1861, ownership of the estate fell to the Masseas (until the 20th century) and then to the Gallons , who in 1984 ceded them to the Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta.

In 1998, under the supervision of the regional administration, restoration work began on the building and was completed in 1999, with some rooms being furnished in a modern style for conferences, exhibitions and events. From the outside the castle offers a sight typical of the 13th century, whereas the interiors, which could not be restored, have been completely renovated and redesigned for museum use.
