The Neolithic phases of Corsica and the Torre culture

The Castellu di Cuntorba (also called Castello de Cuntorba) is located in Olmeto Plage near Propriano above the Gulf of Valinco, in the south of Corsica in France .

The Bronze Age Torre is a megalithic cult site of the Torre culture and was built around 1200 BC. A small part of the buildings is, as is typical for the Torreaner, integrated into a natural rock formation. The complex is divided into several areas. It is difficult to get an overview of the place from the ground.

The only access through the approximately oval curtain wall is in the east. The further path leads through a narrow pass between a granite block and the wall. It then leads into a polygonal antechamber, which could have served as a guard cell, as the entrance could be observed from here through a slot in the wall. It is part of the central complex but appears to be a later addition. This is followed by a curved duct connection to the central cell. The actual monument is in the north and consists of a round building with a central cell with two side niches, similar to those found in Sardinian nuraghi . The excavations show that the Torreaner first erected the monument. Rooms were added later, and finally the outer wall followed. On the southern inner side of the wall there are remains that could represent walls of buildings.
