The Castillo de Chinchilla de Montearagón is a 15th century castle (castillo) on the outskirts of Chinchilla de Montearagón , a municipality around 270 km southeast of Madrid in the province of Albacete in the autonomous region of Castilla-La Mancha ( Spain ). The castle sits enthroned on a steep cliff above the town and is a protected architectural monument .

history

Already in the time of the Moors there was a castle on the rock that was visible from afar. After the reconquest , it was bought by Juan Pacheco , Marqués de Villena , in 1449 and subsequently rebuilt. Cesare Borgia was a prisoner for some time (probably 1504/05) in the castle, which later served as a prison for several centuries. During the Napoleonic Wars , the keep (torre del homenaje) was hit by artillery shells in 1812.

architecture

Today you can still see the remains of the outer fortress wall and the moat hewn out of the rock, as well as the well-preserved crenellated inner wall with its semicircular defense towers and the two gates Diablos and Tiradores .
