Castillo de la Luz

The Castillo de la Luz is a former sea fortress in the north of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands . In early 2014, after years of renovation, it was reopened as a marine museum and exhibition space for art.

The square building with massive walls was built in 1541 on the remains of the fortress walls of a destroyed castle from the time of the conquest. It was built mainly to protect against pirates and was equipped with eleven cannons. For centuries it formed an important defense system against attacks from the seaside, at that time still by the sea. In 1595 Francis Drake did not succeed in taking the fortress with an English fleet, but in 1599 the Dutchman Pieter van der Does , who looted and burned it down. From 1601 it was restored. Military use was given up in the 19th century.

Due to land reclamation, the building no longer has any contact with the sea. It has been a listed building since 1941 . Since the first restoration was completed (1969–1972) it has housed a maritime museum and other exhibition rooms. There were also cultural events. In 1990 the fortress was restored. After the architecture firm Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos won the competition to redesign the building in 1998, renovation work began in 2001 so that the interior could not be viewed for years. The renovation, originally planned to take two years, cost around 6.6 million euros and was repeatedly delayed by archaeological finds, the bankruptcy of the construction company in 2007 and double vandalism in 2011.

On January 28, 2014, the castle was reopened as a marine museum and exhibition space for art after 13 years of renovation by the Crown Prince couple. From June 2014, works by local artist Martín Chirino will also be exhibited there. The redevelopment is related to a large-scale redesign of the city.
