Castle Falkenstein is a pen and paper role-playing game . The English original was published in 1994 by R. Talsorian Games , the German translation in 1997 by Truant Verlag .
It takes place in a kind of steampunk Europe called Neuropa. This world is roughly the same as 19th century Victorian Europe with a different technology based largely on the use of steam. Other peculiarities are the existence of different fairy races and magic.
regulate
The set of rules describes the world in novel form, but the actual rules are only an appendix. These rules, which are often somewhat vague, result in a role-playing game that is characterized by improvisation and thus partly reminiscent of a LARP .
In contrast to other role-playing games, the game is played with cards instead of dice . A complete set of Canasta cards is used for this, i.e. 2 × 52 cards with a French hand and six jokers, which Castle Falkenstein calls Fateful Sheet . Each player has four cards that, depending on their color, can be used as bonuses for an ability. The cross favors physical actions, spades social, hearts emotional and diamonds mental actions. This allows the player to coordinate his actions better than in dice role-playing games.
