Castle Upton is a castle in Templepatrick in County Antrim .

history

The current main house was built in 1611 by Sir Robert Norton. For this reason the castle was also known as Norton Castle . Henry Upton bought the castle in 1625. In 1963 it became the property of the Kinahan family, who now live in it. Some of the buildings are open to the public for tours. The castle can also be rented for weddings.

architecture

The outer wall of the castle courtyard runs along the main street of Templepatrick. From there you get to the castle through a gate castle. The center of the site is the residential tower built in 1611 with walls up to 1.5 meters thick. In addition, there are stables on the site that were built in the style of a Roman fortification . The mausoleum is administered by the National Trust . This building, built in the form of a triumphal arch , served as the burial place of the Viscounts Templetown . It was created during the fundamental renovation of the castle, which was carried out by Robert Adam in 1783 . In the course of this, the house was expanded considerably. The part of the castle known as the Adams Wing was completely in ruins, but was rebuilt by the owners.
