Castlecary Castle

Castlecary Castle is a tower house near the Scottish village of Castlecary in the Council Area Falkirk . In 1972 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

It is believed that there was a fortress or moth at the site of Castlecary Castle as early as the late 13th century . In the second half of the 15th century, the land came into the possession of Henry Livingston of Middilbyning , who had the castle built around 1485. In the document from 1491, when the lands passed into the possession of his son Patrick, the Tower House is listed as a new building. Patrick was the person who used the Denomination of Origin "of Castlecary". The lands were inherited within the family for generations. The line died out with Harry Livingston of Castlecary in 1657 and the lands became the property of the Baillie family . In the early 18th century, James Dundas obtained Castlecary Castle by marriage.

description

Castlecary Castle is on the western border of Falkirk, southwest of the village of Castlecary, which already belongs to North Lanarkshire . It was likely originally intended to have an L-shaped floor plan, but the work was not carried out. The structure was expanded in the course of the 17th century. A date above the entrance indicates the year 1679.
