Castlemilk is a mansion near the Scottish town of Kettleholm in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. In addition, numerous associated structures are classified as monuments in categories B and C. Scottish architect David Bryce completed the design for Castlemilk in 1863. The work was carried out between 1864 and 1866. Castlemilk is one of the largest single buildings in Bryce and is its largest fully preserved structure. The builder was the politician Robert Jardine, 1st Baronet .

description

Castlemilk is located in the middle of a spacious estate around 800 m northeast of Kettleholm near the Water of Milk . The two to three story mansion is designed in the historic Scottish Baronial style . Castlemilk has a complex structure. A striking feature is a tower on the east-facing front, which is stylistically reminiscent of Castle Fraser with its surrounding balustrade . There is the entrance area with a massive porte-cochère . The slate-covered roofs are partly designed with stepped gables . Various corner tours protrude from it. A former winter garden on the south side has meanwhile been converted into a dining room.

bridge

Around 200 m south of Castlemilk, an arch bridge spans a lake. It leads to an access road coming from the east. It was built around 1865 based on a design by David Bryce. The masonry consists of stone blocks and is decorated with cornices . The main arch is worked as a pointed arch with flanking segment arches. The delimiting parapets fan out at the driveways. Four bulges along the parapet are designed in the style of crowd watch towers .
