Castrip

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Castrip describes a casting process for steel .

In this process, a band of steel is created by pouring hot, liquid steel directly between two rollers that are only a short distance apart.

The steel solidifies there in around 200 milliseconds , forming a band around 1.6 millimeters thick. This is transported on between the rollers and arrives in a rolling stand through a small strip storage device filled with protective gas . There it is rolled to the final dimension in a thickness between 0.7 and 2 millimeters. A cooling section for cooling the strip and a reel that winds the strip, which can weigh up to 40 tons, are arranged below.

The process is currently only suitable for certain types of steel. Due to the rapid solidification in the casting process, however, steel properties can be achieved which are difficult or impossible to achieve with normal hot rolling . In addition, it is the process for producing hot strip that uses the least amount of energy. The typical annual production of a plant is 500,000 to 700,000 tons. The first two plants worldwide were built in Nucor's steel mills in Crawfordsville, Indiana and Blytheville , USA.
