Catalán is a small impact crater near the southwestern edge of the Earth's moon . Due to this position it is extremely difficult to observe from the earth , as it is viewed from the side and its visibility is also subject to libration effects . It is located west of the somewhat larger Baade crater and south-southeast of Graff crater .
Its environment is formed by the outer southeastern ejecta belt that surrounds the Mare Orientale , and the lunar surface in this area is rough and streaky.
Catalán is essentially circular but appears somewhat irregular. The crater rim is sharp-edged with minimal traces of erosion. In the north and south-east, areas of the inner crater wall have slipped and left indentations in the rim. The crater floor is rough and irregular with no central elevation.
Exactly to the west, the two satellite craters 'Catalán A' and 'Catalán B' form an overlapping pair. Both are bowl-shaped and have a sharp edge. To the northwest, this arrangement is completed by the almost perfectly symmetrical bowl shape of 'Catalán U'.
