The Catedral Ortodoxa dos Arcanjos Micael e Gabriel ("Orthodox Cathedral of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel") is a Greek Orthodox church in the center of the Mozambican capital Maputo at the intersection of Avenida Armando Tivane / Avenida Ahmed Sekou Touré . The church was built between 1958 and 1960 with the support of the Greek minority in Lourenço Marques.

The church belongs to the Diocese of Maputo of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria .

history

At the beginning of the 20th century, many Greeks were already drawn to South Africa , where they worked in mines or in railway construction. After the end of the Greek civil war in 1949, thousands of Greeks emigrated, including to the then Portuguese Mozambique. The Greek community was one of the larger minorities in the capital Lourenço Marques. As early as the 1940s, she set up her own headquarters in the center of Maputo, in the so-called Ateneu Grego .

In order to be able to practice their religion in a prestigious place, the community collected donations for the construction of its own church and commissioned the Greek architect Evan Lembros with the planning. The foundation stone for the church was laid on March 23, 1958. The building was completed in 1960.

Until 1968 the church belonged to the Diocese of Johannesburg, since 1968 to the Diocese of Zimbabwe. After Mozambique gained independence in 1975, most of the Greek minority left the country and the Orthodox community shrank rapidly. It only grew again in the course of the 1990s and 2000s, mainly due to foreigners of Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Romanian and Serbian origin.

During the renovation and restoration of the church in the 1990s, the Zimbabwean artist Helen Lieros designed numerous new murals for the church. She designed and painted the murals over a period of four years (1996 to 2000) free of charge.

In 2006 the Synod of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria elevated the parish of Maputo to a diocese. In 2011, the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (ILO) and the Pan-African Parliament signed a cooperation agreement. The cooperation office has been in Maputo since then. Since 2011, Greek lessons have also been given on the premises of the community.

On February 16, 2014, the church was rededicated by Patriarch Theodoros II after long renovation work .
