Cathedral Plaza

The Cathedral Plaza next to the Catholic Cathedral (July 2009)

Cathedral Plaza is an office tower that has been under construction since 2005 in the historic center of the Romanian capital Bucharest . The 19-storey building is 75 m high.

The legality of the building permit from 2000 is controversial. For the opponents of the building, the Cathedral Plaza , which is being built ten meters away next to the Catholic St. Joseph's Cathedral, is a symbol of the destruction of the historical building ensemble that remained in Bucharest's old town after the communist era for the benefit of financially strong investors. They also point to the high risk of earthquakes in the region. After a construction freeze in 2008 was lifted in the following year, a demonstration with 6,000 participants took place in July 2009 from the Joseph's Cathedral to the government building on Victory Square .

The court of appeal in Suceava decided on July 12, 2011 in the last instance that the “Cathedral Plaza” property had been illegally built and had to be demolished. The then mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, was responsible for the demolition .
