Sorin Mircea Oprescu (born November 7, 1951 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian doctor and politician. He was the mayor of Bucharest from 2008 to 2015.

Life

Oprescu studied medicine in Bucharest from 1973 to 1978 and became a surgeon. In 1981 he received his doctorate. He started an academic career and has been a professor at the Carol Davila Medical and Pharmaceutical University in Bucharest since 2000 .

In the 1990s he was initially active in health policy. In 1992/93 he was an advisor to the Ministry of Health and from 1996 to 2000 to the Bucharest mayor's office.

Since 2000 Oprescu has also been active in party politics; for the Partidul Social Democrat (PSD, until 2001 Partidul Democrației Sociale in România, PDSR) he was a member of the Senate from 2000 to 2004 and from 2005 to 2008 . During these periods he served as Vice President of the Senate Health Commission. Oprescu temporarily held higher party functions, such as B. as PSD chairman in Bucharest and vice-president of the entire party.

In the spring of 2008, Oprescu planned to run for the office of Lord Mayor of Bucharest, but was defeated by an opposing candidate in an internal party vote. Oprescu then resigned from the PSD and ran as a non-party applicant. In the runoff election he was able to defeat Vasile Blaga , the candidate of the PD-L , and became mayor of the Romanian capital.

Oprescu ran in the presidential election on November 22, 2009 , where he ran again as an independent. He was initially given opportunities to reach the runoff election and defeat the previous incumbent Traian Băsescu in this . Ultimately, however, Oprescu only won 3% of the vote and thus clearly missed his election target.

In 2012 Oprescu ran again for the office of Lord Mayor. With the support of the newly founded social-liberal party alliance USL , Oprescu received 56.67% of the votes cast in the first ballot in June 2012 and thus became mayor of Bucharest for the second time.

On September 15, 2015, Oprescu was removed from office. The pre-trial detention imposed on him after being charged with bribery had become final the day before. He is accused of taking bribes for preferential public procurement.
