Vasile Blaga (born July 26, 1956 in Petrileni , Bihor County ) is a Romanian politician , chairman of the Democratic Liberal Party ( Romanian Partidul Democrat Liberal , PDL), from 2004 to 2007 administration and interior minister in the government of Tăriceanu , from 2008 to 2009 Minister for Regional Development in the Boc I cabinet , from 2009 to 2010 Interior Minister in the Boc II cabinet , from 2011 to 2012 President of the Romanian Senate .

Professional background

Vasile Blaga studied mechanical engineering at the Traian Vuia Polytechnic University in Timișoara from 1976 to 1981 . From 1981 to 1990 he worked for the mechanical engineering company Hiperion in Ștei , first as an engineer, then as a department manager and finally as a commercial director.

After completing several courses in customs from 1994 to 1995 at the Academy in Vienna and then in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate , he was appointed General Director of the Regional Customs Directorate Oradea .

Political career

From 1990, the political activity of Blagas began as a member of the newly established Front of National Rescue ( Romanian Frontul Salvării Naţionale , FSN) of Bihor County. In the same year he was elected chairman of the Council of the Front for National Rescue ( Romanian Consiliul Frontului Salvării Naționale , CFSN) in Ștei and deputy chairman of the Council of the Front for National Rescue in Bihor County, a year later chairman of the Front of the National Rescue Bihor.

As a founding member of the Democratic Party ( Romanian Partidul Democrat , PD) Blaga was from 1991 to 1997 chairman of the Bihor district organization and from 1997 to 2001 general secretary of PD Bihor. In 2001 he was elected chairman of PD Bucharest. After the parliamentary elections of November 2004, when Blaga was Băsescu's campaign leader , he became adviser to the newly elected president on matters of defense and state security and head of the department of national security and presidential administration .

In December 2007, the Democratic Party (PD) merged with the Liberal Democratic Party ( Romanian Partidul Liberal Democrat , PLD) under Theodor Stolojan to form the Democratic Liberal Party ( Romanian Partidul Democrat Liberal , PD-L). After the defeat of the Democratic-Liberal Party (PD-L) in the nationwide local elections in June 2012, its leadership resigned. Two weeks later the PD-L elected Vasile Blaga as its new chairman at the party congress in Bucharest.

During the state crisis in Romania in 2012 , the governing coalition deposed the presidents of both chambers of parliament on June 3, 2012. Senate President Vasile Blaga called his removal illegal and spoke of a "coup" by the alliance of Prime Minister Victor Ponta . The Senate then elected the leader of the Liberal Party (PNL), Crin Antonescu , as the new President of the Chamber.

In 2014 the PD-L became part of the PNL and Blaga was co-chairman together with Alina Gorghiu until 2016 .
