Catocala hymenaea is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 46 to 48 millimeters. Light brown tones dominate on the upper side of the forewing. The black inner transverse line, starting from the front edge , initially runs very thickly to about the middle of the wing and continues slightly curved as a thin line to the inner edge . Because of this characteristic, the species is unmistakable. The outer transverse line is black-brown and initially runs in a W-shaped jagged shape and then slightly curved to the inner edge. A short narrow blackish wipe extends toward the apex . The somewhat indistinct kidney flaw has the shape of an 8. A wide, black-brown outer band and a narrow, slightly curved central band of the same color stand out from the yellow upper side of the hind wing.
Egg, caterpillar, pupa
The egg is very flat and has a dark rusty brown color with a white-green band. It is irregularly covered with small warts, ribs are absent. The micropyl zone is whitish green.
The caterpillars are ash gray or reddish brown in color and have small dark spots and reddish brown warts on the body surface. On the back there are fine, black edged, wavy longitudinal lines. A large, blunt, rearward-facing, fleshy cone stands out on the eighth segment. Two smaller red-brown tips are on the eleventh segment.
The red-brown doll is covered with blue and white frosting and has numerous curved bristles on the wrinkled cremaster .
distribution and habitat
Catocala hymenaea is widespread from Eastern Austria to the Balkan Peninsula and the Black Sea . To the east, the area extends to Asia Minor and the Altai and Urals . The species primarily inhabits areas interspersed with Prunus bushes.
Way of life
The moths are mainly found in July and August. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars live from late March to June and prefer to feed on the leaves of the blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ). The species overwinters as an egg.
