Catocala ultronia is a butterfly ( moth )foundin North America from the family of the owl butterfly (Noctuidae).

The moths reach a wingspan of 46 to 60 millimeters. The color of the upper side of the forewings is predominantly ash gray, sometimes white gray or brown gray. The drawing runs mainly lengthways and not, as with most Catocala species, crosswise. A black-brown area runs along the inner edge . The apex area is usually reddish brown. Inner and outer transverse lines are black and strongly jagged. Ring and kidney defects are indistinct. The upper side of the hind wing is bright red and marked with a wide black border and a narrow black central band. The fringes are white.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are gray-brown in color. They show a reddish-brown protrusion of thorns on the fifth body segment, which resembles a spike tip. If the caterpillar hugs a branch, it can hardly be seen by predators.

distribution and habitat

Catocala ultronia occurs widespread to local in the eastern and some central regions of North America. The species primarily inhabits deciduous forests and river banks.

Way of life

The nocturnal, univoltine moths are mainly found between July and August. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various plants. These include Prunus species, red ash ( Fraxinus pennsylvanica ), American linden ( Tilia americana ) and large-toothed poplar ( Populus grandidentata ). The species overwinters in the egg stage.
