Catocala vidua is a butterfly found in North America( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae). The specific epithet is derived from the Latin word vidua with the meaning widow and refers to the gray and black clothes that a mourning widow wears and which also represent the basic colors of the moths.
features
The moths reach a wingspan of 69 to 85 millimeters. The top of the forewings is ash gray to gray-brown in color and blackish marbled or striped. Inner and outer transverse lines are black and strongly jagged. While the distinct kidney blemish is filled brownish, the ring blemish is usually missing . The upper side of the hind wing is deep black without drawing, the fringes are silky white.
distribution and habitat
Catocala vidua occurs widely to locally in the eastern and central regions of North America. The species inhabits deciduous forests.
Way of life
The nocturnal, univoltine moths can be found between July and October. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars feed primarily on the leaves of various types of hickory ( Carya ). The food crops include other walnuts (Juglandaceae), oaks ( Quercus ), willows ( Salix ) and common robinia ( Robinia pseudoacacia ). The species overwinters in the egg stage.
