Cecilia Cole

Cecilia MR Cole (born Cecilia Rendall in 1921 ; died July 2, 2006 in Bakau ) was a Gambian teacher and politician.

Life

Cole obtained the Junior Cambridge Certificate and was one of the first Gambian women to receive the Senior Cambridge Certificate . After studying abroad, she worked as a teacher from 1942, including at the Methodist Girls' High School (from 1959 Gambia High School ) as a senior mistress and English teacher. In addition, she was involved in the church and civil society, for example in the Gambia Women's Finance Association (GAWFA).

She was nominated by President Yahya Jammeh to the Gambian Parliament in January 1997 and was the only female MP in this legislative period until 2002 . She was also deputy parliamentary speaker during this period.

On July 2, 2006, after a brief illness, she died at the age of 86 in a clinic in Bakau . In the same year she was posthumously awarded the Order of the Republic of The Gambia at the level of Commander .

She married in 1952. Her daughter Priscilla Modupeh (Mummy) Gladys was also a teacher and married the future Anglican Bishop Solomon Tilewa Johnson in 1980 and had three children with him.
