Cent (HRR)
The cent or cent was a legal term that existed in the Middle Ages and early modern times and was used in several ways. The main meaning was the high judiciary, but also the judicial district in whose area this legal institution was applied.
definition
The term “cent” goes back to the time of the Franconian conquest and was derived from the Latin centum (“hundred”). This was due to the fact that the Frankish colonists settled in hundreds of people , who were accordingly called "Centens" ( centenae ). The resulting name "Centene" stood for a closed settlement area that the colonists had made arable through clearing and which was the lowest administrative district of the king's country . The "centenars" above the hundreds had the main task of administering the royal cleared land and the royal courts built on it, but they also had certain judicial powers. From the cleared areas opened up by the new settlers, clearly delineated court districts emerged, the boundaries of which were repeatedly clogged up and petrified at periodic intervals . At the end of this development, the term “cent” then stood not only for the judicial district, but also for the jurisdiction that was applied in this district.
