Central Asia Institute

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Central Asia Institute (CAI) is a not-for- profit company co-founded by Greg Mortenson and Jean Hoerni . Her idea is to support girls in particular in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan with reading learning and educational programs that have a community character. The institute's administrative headquarters are located in Bozeman , Montana , United States of America .

Services

The support services include:

  • Establishment and promotion of 131 schools in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan
  • Support of 687 full and part-time teachers
  • Funding for 58,000 students, including 44,000 female students
  • Training offers for victims of the earthquake in Pakistan. The October 2005 earthquake, which had a value of 7.8 on the Richter scale, killed 74,000 people, including 18,000 students, and destroyed 2.8 million homes. The CAI rebuilt 16 schools destroyed by these earthquakes.

Programs

A village must guarantee that at least ten percent of the girls in its village school go to school so that CAI can build a school there. “Mortenson believes, as do many experts, that providing education for girls directly helps to lower infant mortality and bring down birth rates – which in turn reduces the ignorance and poverty that help fuel religious extremism.” (German: Mortensen believes, like others Experts also suggest that education for girls directly helps lower child mortality and the birth rate, thereby reducing the ignorance and poverty that fuels religious extremism.)

CAI supports the Pennies for Peace program , in which schoolchildren help support the activities of the CAI fund with donations of pennies .

One of the pioneers of software development in Silicon Valley, Jean Hoerni, has been supporting the institute since 1996 and appointed Greg Mortenson as its first executive director.

Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin published a book on the history of CAI entitled Three Cups of Tea , which was recognized as a bestseller in 2006 by the New York Times .

In 2009, Greg Mortenson, co-founder of the Central Asia Institute, was honored with the Sitara-e-Pakistan (Star of Pakistan), the highest civilian award for humanistic achievement in Pakistan , for his humanistic work and educational support for girls .
