The Chapmansegler ( Chaetura chapmani ) is a species of bird in the family of sailors (Apodidae). The species has a large distribution area that includes the South American countries Brazil , Colombia , French Guiana , Guyana , Panama ; Includes Suriname , Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern .

features

The Chapman sailor reaches a body length of about 13 to 14 centimeters. This species of the genus Chaetura is strikingly black. The upper part is black, while the surface of the upper wings and the back is colored green in the new plumage and blue in the older ones. The rump is dark brown and therefore only slightly paler than the back. The bottom part is soot gray throughout. The neck is only slightly lighter so that the different shading is hardly noticeable.

Habitat

Very little is known about the habitat of the Chapman sailor. It moves at heights of 100 to 1600 meters. It is not entirely clear whether it is a migratory bird that only spends the breeding season in a certain area, or whether it stays there all the time.

behavior

The Chapman sailor can often be seen in groups with other sailors, especially those of the Chaetura species.

Subspecies

In the past, Chaetura chapmani viridipennis was considered a subspecies of Chaetura chapmani . After studying the habitus and morphometric analysis, Manuel Marín came to the conclusion in 2000 that Chaetura viridipennis is a species of its own. This opinion is shared by the South American Classification Committee .
