Central Obrera Boliviana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Central Obrera Boliviana (COB) is the umbrella organization of the Bolivian trade unions . It was founded in 1952 after the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario came to power through a revolution. The strongest member group of the COB was the Federación Sindical de Trabajadores Mineros de Bolivia FSTMB (German Union of Bolivian Miners ), which in 1946 had adopted the “Pulacayo Theses”, a revolutionary, Trotskyist- inspired program that went beyond union issues. From 1952 to 1987 the COB was led by Juan Juan Lechín Oquendo , who was also head of the FSTMB.

The COB is traditionally “rebellious” and conflict-prone and has had a difficult relationship with all Bolivian presidents since the 1950s. She has recently played an important role in the demonstrations that ousted President Carlos Mesa in 2005. The COB currently supports the nationalization of gas production and fought in 2000 against the privatization of the drinking water company in Cochabamba .

The trade union umbrella organization represents around 2 million Bolivian workers from various branches of industry as well as the public sector and is in close contact with the leaders of the indigenous population, such as B. Felipe Quispe Huanca .

The current union secretary of the COB is Jaime Solares, a revolutionary socialist who also does not have a very good relationship with Evo Morales , the Bolivian president.
