The CSEM SA is a Swiss research and development center with a focus on micro and nanotechnology, microelectronics, systems engineering and communications technologies. In addition to its headquarters in Neuchâtel , the CSEM has other locations in Muttenz , Zurich , Alpnach and Landquart . The CSEM operates a foreign branch in Brazil .

history

The history of the CSEM began in the early 1980s. At that time, the Swiss Confederation had developed visionary plans after concerns had been raised in the Federal Council that Switzerland could fall behind its neighboring countries in terms of new technologies. To counter this trend, the council vigorously promoted the establishment of a private research and development center. Neuchâtel, which has long been known for its watch industry and microtechnology, was chosen as the ideal location for this new innovation center.

Since its inception, the CSEM has been dedicated to both applied and industry-commissioned research and development. This bridging function between business and science is still an essential characteristic of the company, whereby the CSEM has continuously adapted its research focus to the needs of industry. While in the early years there was still a close relationship with the watch industry, the CSEM has meanwhile expanded its field of activity so that today a wide range of technologies is offered for a wide variety of markets.

Skills and Activities

What distinguishes the CSEM is its high level of competence in the fields of integration and process engineering as well as the multidisciplinary, system-oriented approach, which comprises five strategic programs: microsystems, systems, ultra-low-power integrated systems, photovoltaics and surface technology.

The technologies of the CSEM cover the needs of a wide variety of markets: from medical technology and watchmaking to the aerospace industry to the security industry, entertainment electronics and cleantech (including energy generation and management).
