Center de Recerca Matemàtica

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Center de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM) is a mathematical research institute in Barcelona .

history

The institute was founded in 1984 as part of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC, the Catalan Academy). Since 2002 it has been a consortium between the IEC and the Generalitat de Catalunya (the Catalan government). It is located in the mathematics building of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona .

The founding director was Manuel Castellet , a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona who did his doctorate in algebraic topology in 1973 in Zurich under Beno Eckmann . The research institute for mathematics founded by Eckmann at the ETH Zurich was a model for the establishment of the Barcelona institute. The invited scientists and post-doctoral students should promote international contacts between mathematicians in Catalonia. Like the ETH Research Center, it has close ties to the university. The center received a particular boost in preparation and hosting of the third European Congress of Mathematicians in 2000 in Barcelona.

In line with the interests of Castellat, one focus is algebraic topology, for which a conference takes place in Barcelona every four years.

Working method

At the moment (2013) there are 19 permanent scientists employed. The institute organizes trimesters on special topics as well as summer schools, conferences and seminars.
