Center de stockage de l'Aube

The Center de stockage de l'Aube is a nuclear waste - repository in France.

The Center de l'Aube repository is used for the emplacement of low and medium level radioactive waste and has taken over the tasks of the older Center de la Manche after its closure. The first waste drums were delivered in 1992. The repository is located on the territory of the Soulaines-Dhuys municipality and has a capacity of 1 million m³.

By the end of 1997, 76,000 m³ had been stored in the Center. The operation is automated and computer-monitored to a much greater extent than in the Center de la Manche, where many operational processes were still carried out manually. Otherwise, the storage technique (tumulus and monolith blocks) is comparable to that of the Center de La Manche.

The waste barrels and concrete containers are not stored deeply like the highly radioactive waste, but on the surface. They are stacked in six layers on a concrete platform that is drained through small channels. If the warehouse is full, it is made water-impermeable and covered with earth. It is to be monitored for 300 years. It is then assumed that the radioactivity of this weakly active waste has declined to the level of natural radiation.

When planning the plant, it was assumed that around 30,000 m³ will be stored annually, 90% of which from the nuclear energy industry, the rest from other industries and hospitals. Accordingly, the intended operating time was around 30 years. However, the quantities actually delivered are well below the original expectations, so that 60 years of operation can be expected. There is a separate compaction plant on site.
