Center de la Manche

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Center de stockage de la Manche near La Hague in northern France, low-level and medium-level radioactive waste was disposed of near the surface from 1969–1994. The aim was to ensure the containment of radioactive substances over a period of 200–300 years. The emplacement phase is to be followed by a monitoring phase of around 300 years.

Storage was essentially carried out in two ways: in underground concrete monoliths for medium-level or alpha-containing waste or in above-ground mounds covered with soil ( tumulus ) for short-lived low-level radioactive waste. In order to minimize the risk potential, nuclide-specific limit values for the activity concentration had to be observed for the waste packages, especially for long-lived alpha emitters. On July 12, 1994, the last container with radioactive waste was brought to the Center de la Manche. A total of around 526,650 m³ has been stored since 1969. Around two thirds of this waste comes from the operation of nuclear power plants . The amount of waste stored contains around 382 TBq of alpha activity. The total activity is around 40,000 TBq, around two thirds of which are 60 Co and 137 Cs. The repository was closed in 1994. To replace the closure, the Center de l'Aube was opened in 1992 .

In 2006, the network "Sortir du nucléaire" claimed ( German : phasing out nuclear energy), at the Center de stockage de la Manche were on the surface plutonium and toxic chemicals scattered over an area of 15 hectares. The radioactivity is still dangerous after more than 300 years. According to Greenpeace, it is one of the largest nuclear waste dumps in the world. 11% of the nuclear waste is of foreign origin, of which Germany has the largest share with more than half.

An ACRO study commissioned by the Department of Manche and the French Nuclear Safety Authority in 2013 shows that the data from the French nuclear waste agency ANDRA are underestimated.
