The Centro Federal de Readaptación Social Número 2 Occidente , popularly Puente Grande , is located in Puente Grande, southeast of the state capital Guadalajara in the Mexican state of Jalisco . It is one of three maximum security prisons administered by the Mexican government.

One of the main problems facing the prison is permanent overcrowding. There are more than 12,000 inmates in its four prisons.

Well-known prisoners are José de Jesús Méndez alias "El Chango", one of the founders of the Michoacana family , and Alfredo Beltrán Leyva "El Mochomo", one of the bosses of the Beltrán Leyva cartel .

The internationally best-known prisoner in Puente Grande was Joaquín Guzmán "El Chapo", boss of the Sinaloa cartel . He managed a spectacular escape on January 19, 2001, in which parts of the prison staff were allegedly involved.
