Beltrán-Leyva cartel
The Beltrán Leyva Cartel (span: Cártel de los Beltrán Leyva ) was a criminal organization from Mexico that was founded in 2008. It quickly rose to become a powerful Mexican drug cartel . After the death of its leader Marcos Arturo Beltrán-Leyva , it split up and was almost completely destroyed.
history
The four brothers Marcos Arturo, Alfredo, Carlos and Héctor Beltrán-Leyva had belonged to the Sinaloa cartel since the 1980s . After the arrest of Alfredo Beltrán-Leyva (aka El Mochomo ) in January 2008, they accused his cousin El Chapo , the drug lord of the Sinaloa cartel, of betraying Alfredo's whereabouts to the police. They retaliated in May 2008 with the ordered murder of Edgar Guzmán Lopez, Guzman's son. Under the leadership of Marcos Arturo Beltrán-Leyva, they split off from the Sinaloa cartel and allied themselves with Los Zetas . As a result, there was intense fighting with her former partners for the next two years.
On December 16, 2009, Marcos Arturo Beltrán-Leyva was shot dead by the Mexican Navy in a gun battle . His brother Carlos Beltrán-Leyva was arrested on December 30, 2009. These losses at the top of the Beltrán-Leyva cartel sparked a struggle for succession in the organization. It split into two main factions and several splinter groups.
A faction was formed around Héctor Beltrán Leyva (alias El H ) and Sergio Enrique Villarreal (alias El Grande ), called Cartel Pacifico Sur . El Grande was arrested on September 12, 2010 and El H was arrested on October 1, 2014.
Another organization was formed around Edgar Valdez Villareal (alias La Barbie ), the former right hand of Arturo Beltrán-Leyva, and Óscar Osvaldo García Montoya (alias El Compayito ), who founded the group Mano con Ojos . On August 30, 2010, La Barbie was arrested by federal police. and on August 11, 2011 El Compayito .
In September 2016, the alleged leader of the cartel Clara Elena Laborin was arrested. She is the wife of the former head of the cartel Héctor Beltrán Leyva.
