Los Caballeros Templarios ( German : Die Tempelritter ) was a Mexican criminal association and a drug cartel . The organization was formed in 2011 from parts of the La Familia Michoacana cartel, which has since been dissolved, and has its base of operations in the Mexican state of Michoacán .

The Knights Templar see their activities as a “live and die” for “ social justice ”. They swear to protect widows, orphans and the oppressed. The cartel has taken complete control of La Familia Michoacana's operations in the states of Michoacán , Guerrero , México , and Morelos .

La Resistencia is used as a paramilitary association , an organization that fights against the Los Zetas on behalf of the Knights Templar as well as the Sinaloa and the Gulf Cartel .

On February 27, 2015 the leader of the Knights Templar Servando "La Tuta" Gómez and some cartel members were arrested by the Mexican federal police. Properties owned by the cartel were subsequently confiscated by the Mexican government.

history

After the death of Nazario Moreno González , the founder of La Familia Michoacana , his old partners Enrique Plancarte Solís and Servando Gómez Martínez founded the Knights Templar . Another partner, Dionicio Loya Plancarte , also showed interest in the new cartel.

Pope visit 2012

On the occasion of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 . In several cities in the state of Guanajuato , the Knights Templar hung banners welcoming the Pope and announcing that they would not commit violent acts for the duration of the visit. The banners said:

"Los Caballeros Templarios se deslindan de cualquier acción bélica, no somos asesinos, bienvenido el Papa"

"The Knights Templar will not take part in any acts of war, we are not murderers, welcome Pope"

The banners were posted in the cities of León , San Miguel de Allende , Irapuato , Salamanca , Yuriria , Moroleón , and Uriangato . Other banners were allegedly hung by the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación .

2013

In June 2013, the US Treasury Blacklisted the Knights Templar . As a result of this measure, it is possible to freeze all of the cartel's assets in the USA. Furthermore, US citizens are prohibited from doing business with the Knights Templar due to the Kingpin Act .

On October 28, 2013, after around 300 members of a civil militia tried to get Apatzingán under their control, a series of bombings, including against the state-owned electricity company, resulted in power outages in eleven cities , leaving a total of 420,000 people without Electricity were. Other destinations were six petrol stations and one shop. A government official said that the Knights Templar are believed to be behind the attacks. With these attacks, the cartel is trying to show strength against the population and the vigilante groups and thus prevent them from opposing the cartel.

2014

According to Monte Alejandro Rubido García, head of the National Security Agency, one of the cartel's leaders, Jesús Vásquez Macías, aka “El Toro”, was arrested on 19 January in Lázaro Cárdenas along with two other members of the organization.

He is said to be one of the five leaders of the Knights Templar and is also the uncle of the alleged cartel leader Enrique Plancarte Solís, aka "Kike". This in turn was shot dead by elite units of the Mexican Navy on March 31, 2014 in the town of Colón in the state of Querétaro .

2015

At least 37 armed civilians, believed to be members or mercenaries of the Knights Templar, and two federal police officers were killed in clashes in the Tanhuato community , Michoacán state. The place is near the city of Yurécuaro. Shortly before, a candidate for the mayor's office was shot dead during an election campaign. The candidate was a senior member of a vigilante group founded by farmers in Michoacán in 2013 to drive out the "Knights Templar". Tanhuato is also close to the border with the state of Jalisco . There the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel fought with the security forces for supremacy.
