The Centro de Interpretación "Castillo de San Cristóbal" is a museum that was set up under the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is affiliated with the Museo de Historia y Antropología de Tenerife.

Emergence

During the redesign of the Plaza de España in 2006, remnants of the wall of the Castillo San Cristóbal, which was demolished in 1928, were found. This fortification has been the center of the defenses of the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife since the mid-16th century. Due to the importance of the find and because all historical defenses in Spain were placed under cultural protection, it was decided to make the remains accessible to the public as part of a museum. The Centro de Interpretación was opened on July 24, 2008.

Focus

The museum has two main focuses: on the one hand, the history of the Castillo San Cristóbal and the Plaza de España, on the other hand, the importance of the Castillo and the other defenses in repelling enemy attacks. The focus of the representation of the enemy attacks is on the English / British attacks of 1657 under the orders of Robert Blake , 1706 under the orders of John Jennings and especially in 1797 under the orders of Horatio Nelson .

Since July 2009 the “El Tigre” cannon has been at the center of the exhibition. It is believed that a shot from this cannon injured Nelson so much that his right arm had to be amputated.
