Centulle III. (Bigorre)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Centulle III. († 1178 ) was a count of Bigorre and vice count of Marsan . He was the son of Vice Count Peter von Marsan († 1163) and Countess Beatrix II of Bigorre († after 1148), whose possessions he inherited.

He was married to Matelle des Baux, with whom he had a daughter:

For the possession of the Val d'Aran , Centulle became a vassal of King Alfonso II of Aragón in 1170 , while he was a vassal of the Duke of Aquitaine for Bigorre and Marsan . In 1177 he supported his son-in-law in his rebellion against Duke Richard the Lionheart , from whom they were besieged and driven out in the castle of Dax . In 1178, Centulle was finally captured by Richard the Lionheart. On the mediation of the King of Aragón he was soon released, but had to hand over Clermont and Montbrun to the Duke. He died that same year.
