from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Britain early 9th century

Ceolwulf I († 823 ) was the brother of the Mercian king Cenwulf . After his death in 821, Ceolwulf was made king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Kent . His reign lasted only two years.

During his brief reign, he continued his predecessor's expansive policy towards the Welsh kingdoms and briefly brought the Powys Kingdom under his control with the capture of Deganwy Fortress in 822 . Since the beginning of his reign, Ceolwulf was confronted with internal political disagreements and innumerable disputes, at the same time he seemed to lose control of Kent. Ceolwulf was overthrown in 823 by his successor Beornwulf .
