Mercia was an Anglo-Saxon kingdom whose origins lay in what is now the Midlands . Some of the names and dates of the first kings are legendary, and the information is largely secured only from Penda onwards .

Due to the personal union with the Kingdom of Wessex and the unification of England, Mercia lost its independence in the second quarter of the 10th century and this was divided into at least four different earldoms (see Earldoms of Mercia ).
