The Cerro Grande rises directly behind the city of La Serena in the Chilean Región de Coquimbo . The mountain belongs to the Cordillera de La Costa and its silhouette dominates the city center. The side facing the coast rises steeply and the summit is only 4 kilometers behind the coastline. The summit offers views over La Serena Bay and the Andes Mountains.

Ascent

The summit can be reached via a simple road that begins on Avenida Quatro Esquinas. The summit can also be reached by motor vehicle via this route.

vegetation

Low bushes and cacti thrive around the summit. Lichen can generate precipitation from the frequent fog.
