Château Canon-La Gaffelière

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Château Canon-La Gaffelière is a French winery and is located in the Saint-Émilion area . It produces wine of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation and is classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé winery (see also the article Bordeaux wine (classification) ). The estate has been owned by the von Neipperg noble family from Baden-Württemberg since 1971 .

The vineyards of Canon-La Gaffelière are located on sandy soil in the Dordogne valley at the foot of the slope of Saint-Émilion known as the "Côte". The estate has 20 hectares of vineyards . The planting density is 5,500 vines per hectare. The current planting is 55% Merlot , 40% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon . The annual output is usually 50,000 to 60,000 bottles. The huge concrete tanks that can still be seen on the estate have not been used since the early 1990s.

In its classification level, it is one of the best goods. Since 1994 none of the wines has been rated below 90 Parker points . The 2000 wine is at the top with 95 points.

The winery has an interesting ambience to visit and for pre-arranged wine tastings. The large fireplace room with the exhibits and the guest book is worth seeing.

La Mondotte

The neighboring La Mondotte winery was also acquired by the Neippergs in 1971. Originally one wanted to include the wine in the Canon-La Gaffelière. However, this would have cost the latter to be classified as Grand Cru Classé, although the terroir of La Mondotte - 4.5 hectares on a slope in the east of the limestone plateau - is of excellent quality. It was therefore decided to develop the La Mondotte wine separately as a prestigious or high-quality garage wine , which is also done on the larger estate Canon-La Gaffelière. The La Mondotte of the first Neipperg years became a cult wine with four-digit bottle prices. However, critics such as Stuart Pigott see this as a deliberately controlled strategy: In his work “Göttertrank und Blendwerk” Pigott portrays Mondotte as a wine that cannot run for sheer strength and that in no way deserves to be traded so dearly. With the reclassification of Saint-Émilion in 2012, La Mondotte also rose to a Premier Grand Cru Classé .
