Ch'ŏllima statue
The Ch'ŏllima statue ( Korean 천리마 동상 Ch'ŏllima Dongsang ) is a monument in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang . It stands between Moran and Mansu Hills on Chilsongmun Street and was inaugurated on April 15, 1961 on the occasion of Kim Il-sung's 49th birthday .
The monument is located on a 5000 square meter complex and consists of a 34 meter high inclined granite base on which a 16 meter high bronze statue is located. The statue represents the winged horse Chollima from Korean mythology , which became a symbol of reconstruction and industrialization in North Korea after the Korean War . A worker can be seen on his horse, holding up a letter from the party central committee with his right hand. Behind him sits a peasant woman with a sheaf of rice. Both ride towards heaven.
Representation on banknotes and postage stamps
The monument is depicted on the front of the 5 won note from 1992 and the 200 won note from 2009 and as a watermark on the 1, 5, 10 and 200 won notes that were in circulation until 2009 .
The Soviet Union issued a postage stamp with the monument in 1960 on the 15th anniversary of the liberation of Korea by the Soviet Army. In 1989, on the occasion of the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students , which took place in Pyongyang that year, a postage stamp was issued in the GDR showing the monument.
