Chaining the Katechon is an EP by the French black metal band Deathspell Omega .

History of origin

The EP was released on December 8, 2008 by Norma Evangelium Diaboli and The Ajna Offensive. At the same time, the only song on the EP, Chaining the Katechon , appeared on the split LP with SVEST , Veritas Diaboli manet in aeternum . Their material in turn appeared separately on the EP Veritas Diaboli manet in aeternum: Le Diable est ma raison . Both EPs were released as digipak . Norma Evangelium Diaboli describes the work of both bands as a “variation on the same theme, independent and yet complementary”.

Track list

  1. Chaining the Katechon - 22:12

style

Chaining the Katechon follows the experimental style of the last album Fas - ite, maledicti, in ignem aeternum , but differs from this musically. In terms of sound it resembles Diabolus absconditus and compositionally Kénôse without copying them. Unlike previous songs by the band, it begins directly with blast beats and incoherent, dissonant chords . The approach has been compared with that of free jazz , which is intentionally disturbing to the listener . A very calm passage follows with real, continuous riffs .

text

The title refers to the catechon from Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians, which acts as a hold-up of the Antichrist and thus also delays the second coming of Jesus Christ . Thus the chaining of the catechon enables the release of the Antichrist and with it the arrival of the Last Judgment .

The text contains numerous biblical allusions, references to the thoughts of Georges Bataille and metaphysical philosophy.

reception

Justin Norton of about.com described the song as a "creative breakout" of more than 20 minutes "one of the most talented extreme metal bands". He described it as sophisticated, layered black metal that unravels like a novel. The band seems to be playing less music than channeling energy from an alternative dimension. Deathspell Omega can be appreciated both musically and philosophically. Thom Jurek from allmusic described the band as "technically knowledgeable, even masterful". According to Les Éternels , Chaining the Katechon is “another unique work” that should be patiently learned because it is “extremely indigestible” and teeming with details.
