Deathspell Omega is a black metal band from France .

There is no official information about the band members. They want to “avoid the illusion of being important or famous at all costs”. There is only speculation about the members; the collaboration with Mikko Aspa from the Northern Heritage label and the band Clandestine Blaze was confirmed. However, Shaxul from Hirilorn claims to the side A R C A N A N O C T I S that his fellow musician Hasjarl founded Deathspell Omega shortly before the end of Hirilorn as a side project, after Hirilorn's dissolution Shaxul and Hasjarl were still active as remaining members with Deathspell Omega, with the former playing drums, singing and the wrote most of the texts. Compared to the Deaf Sparrow Zine , he lists the bassist Khaos as the third member of the line-up at the time. Shaxul quit in 2002 because the band followed the "'religious" trend "and became avant-garde, which he regards as treason.

The band itself does not reveal any information on its website and rarely gives interviews. The band stated that for reasons of anonymity they had an “ambivalent relationship” with communicating with outsiders. Originally there was no contact with the fan base, the band explained a change of heart with the words: "Communication is necessary when progress reaches a certain point." The band rejects live performances, because what "Deathspell Omega conveys, cannot be understood in such a limited, purely sensual environment ”.

history

On the first two albums, Deathspell Omega played traditional, raw Black Metal in the tradition of Scandinavian bands; In the early recordings, however, “riffs and melodies can be made out”, which “laid the foundation” for the later albums.

With her 2004 album Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice , however, she changed stylistically in a more technical-experimental direction, opted for better recording and production and overall achieved a more psychedelic and disturbing atmosphere in her songs. Musical influences and borrowings from Gregorian song and choral music reinforce the sacred character of the music.

The releases according to Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice , divided into the 2005 EP Kénôse and some split releases, consistently follow the musical approach of the 2004 album and achieve a total playing time of over 80 minutes, exceeding the playing time of the previous album.

Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice marks the first part of a planned trilogy, the second part of which , Fasite, maledicti, was published in ignem aeternum in 2007. In January 2009 the band released another EP Chaining the Katechon , which consists of a single 22-minute track, half of which consists of the material from the 2008 split with SVEST Veritas Diaboli manet in aeternum . In 2010 the third part of the trilogy was released with Paracletus .

Texts

Lyrically, Deathspell Omega deals primarily with Satanism on a metaphysical level as well as other theological topics. The first two parts of their concept trilogy ( Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice and Fas - ite, maledicti, in ignem aeternum ) focus on the theological aspects of God and Satan as well as the relationship between humans and both. The lyrics are commonly referred to as poetic and are more ideologically grounded than most black metal bands. As one of their lyrical inspirations, the band names the French writer and philosopher Georges Bataille , from whose story Madame Edwarda she quotes in her song Diabolus absconditus .
